n. 1. A philosophical proposition, doctrine, or principle of reasoning.
Whilst the genre is utterly fantastic, it typically isn’t a genre that displays a whole load of incredible techniques or a great show of skill. You could argue that the atmosphere and feeling of the music is much more important(and I quite agree), but for those of a different mind… what BM song/band shows exceptional musical talent? Fast pedal or blast beats don’t count. Impress me!
Agalloch - Sowilo Rune
I was so surprised when I realised how many people weren’t aware of Agalloch’s amazing EP, The White. Imagine their folky interlude songs, and then turn all of them them into a 32-minute masterpiece. This is the result!
Very atmospheric. Very acoustic-based. Very good.
Nocturnal Poisoning is the all acoustic post-xasthur project. Originally formed in 2010. Debut album entitled “Other worlds of the mind” due out sometime in 2012 or 2013. At this time, it is a solo band/project.
Regularly updated by Scott(Malefic), and surprisingly very little known. Only 136 likes! It’s going to be nothing like Xasthur, apparently. But regardless, I’m hyped.
Check it out!
I know it’s not black metal, but they need the help. You don’t even have to listen, but at least click the link!
Wardruna - Jara
Okay, so I haven’t recommended an artist in a while, and this isn’t even black metal… but fuck it. Wardruna is a musical project which includes two fairly big names in the BM scene; Kvitrafn and Gaahl. Their music is based on Nordic spiritualism and the runes of the Elder Futhark. I’m sure lovers of anything Norse will adore this folky ambient masterpiece.
Their first and only album, as of yet, is called Runaljod - Gap Var Ginnunga, and makes great use of horns, percussion and all manner of Nordic/folk instruments. The 12-track album flows with the fluidity of a mountain stream - it’s a piece of art, honestly. If you’re a fan of late night/early morning walks in the woods, this is, without a doubt, the album for you.
Do you have any artists that you’d like me to add to my recommendations page?
